Sexual dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia treated with conventional antipsychotics or risperidone
Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, 01/29/0

Liu-Seifert H et al. - These findings suggest that hyperprolactinemia may be associated with sexual dysfunction. They also provide more information on the relationships between prolactin, reproductive hormones, and sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction is an understudied yet important consideration in the treatment of schizophrenia. More attention is warranted in this area as it may provide opportunities for improved quality of life and adherence to treatment for patients.

Comparative efficacy and acceptability of 12 new-generation antidepressants: a multiple-treatments meta-analysis
The Lancet - Early Online Publication, 01/29/0

Cipriani A et al. - Clinically important differences exist between commonly prescribed antidepressants for both efficacy and acceptability in favour of escitalopram and sertraline. Sertraline might be the best choice when starting treatment for moderate to severe major depression in adults because it has the most favourable balance between benefits, acceptability, and acquisition cost.

The functional neuroanatomy of geriatric depression
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 01/29/09

Smith GS et al. - In contrast to decreased metabolism observed in normal aging and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, cortical glucose metabolism was increased in geriatric depressed patients relative to demographically matched controls, particularly in brain regions in which cerebral atrophy was observed, which may represent a compensatory response.

Combined psychotherapy plus benzodiazepines for panic disorder
Cochrane Reviews, 01/29/09

Watanabe N et al. - The review established the paucity of high quality evidence investigating the efficacy of psychotherapy combined with benzodiazepines for panic disorder. Currently, there is inadequate evidence to assess the clinical effects of psychotherapy combined with benzodiazepines for patients who are diagnosed with panic disorder.
