Prevalence of mental disorders in non-demented elderly people in primary care
International Psychogeriatrics, 04/09/15

Baladon L, et al. – The aim of this article is to describe the prevalence of mental disorders in the elderly primary care (PC) population and its associated factors by age groups. Findings suggest that mental disorders are highly prevalent among the elderly in PC in Spain. Efforts are needed to develop strategies to reduce this prevalence and improve the well–being of the elderly. Based on the results, authors thought it might be useful to assess perceived stress regularly in PC, focusing on people who consult for emotional distress, or that have greater perceived stress.

The neurobiology of psychopathy
Psychiatric Annals, 04/20/15

Stratton J, et al. – This review outlines the neurocognitive and neurobiological models of psychopathy. Neurocognitive models propose that deficits in cognition (specifically attention) underlie the deficient processing of emotional information among people with psychopathy. Findings implicate structural and functional abnormalities in prefrontal, limbic, and paralimbic structures, including the orbital frontal cortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, anterior superior temporal gyrus, insula, anterior and posterior cingulate, amygdala, and parahippocampal gyrus. Proposed therapeutic and neurobiological treatment interventions are discussed.

Pharmacological treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia
European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience, 04/24/15

Moller HJ, et al. – Evidence for efficacy of current psychopharmacological medications is difficult to assess because of methodological problems and inconsistent results. The results are highly inconsistent, although overall efficacy results appear to be positive. The unsatisfactory and inconsistent results can be partially explained by methodological problems. These problems need to be solved in the future, and the authors propose some possible solution

Life expectancy in bipolar disorder
Bipolar Disorders, 04/09/15

Kessing LV, et al. – The aim of the present study was to calculate the remaining life expectancy for patients of different ages with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Findings suggest that life expectancy in bipolar disorder is decreased substantially, but less so than previously reported. Patients start losing life–years during early and mid–adulthood.

Psychopharmacological treatment of 2,195 in-patients with borderline personality disorder: A comparison with other psychiatric disorders
European Neuropsychopharmacology, 05/01/15

Bridler R, et al. – Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are usually prescribed a variety of psychotropic drugs; however, none is recommended in the guidelines nor has any been approved for this indication. Contrary to the guidelines, about 90% of in–patients with BPD received psychotropic drugs. Polypharmacy was common, and antipsychotics with sedative profiles such as quetiapine and mood–stabilizing anticonvulsants such as valproate appear to be preferred.

Advancing the accessibility of psychotherapy: Learning from our international colleagues
Journal of Psychiatric Practice, 04/02/15

Sudak DM – Although the Affordable Care Act has theoretically made access to mental health care possible for all patients, the United States continues to lag behind other countries with respect to the provision of psychotherapeutic treatments. Psychotherapy advocates in the United States may be more successful in advocating for such treatments by using similar methods to influence legislators and insurers.

Topiramate in alcohol use disorders: Review and update
CNS Drugs, 04/27/15

Guglielmo R, et al. – The main focus of this review is to discuss all the existing data supporting the use of topiramate in AUDs, with an emphasis on the most recent and relevant clinical implications. Findings indicate that, topiramate, within the dosage range of 75–300 mg/day, could be considered as a first–line treatment option for the management of AUDs. Its use appears to be safe and well–tolerated, especially in light of very recent findings.
